چکیده

A new type of ultra-high resolution atmospheric global circulation model is developed. The new model is designed to perform ‘‘cloud resolving simulations’’ by directly calculating deep convection and meso-scale circulations, which play key roles not only in the tropical circulations but in the global circulations of the atmosphere. Since cores of deep convection have a few km in horizontal size, they have not directly been resolved by existing atmospheric general circulation models (AGCMs). In order to drastically enhance horizontal resolution, a new framework of a global atmospheric model is required; we adopted nonhydrostatic governing equations and icosahedral grids to the new model, and call it Nonhydrostatic ICosahedral Atmospheric Model (NICAM). In this article, we review governing equations and numerical techniques employed, and present the results from the unique 3.5-km mesh global experiments—with O(10) computational nodes— using realistic topography and land/ocean surface thermal forcing. The results show realistic behaviors of multi-scale convective systems in the tropics, which have not been captured by AGCMs. We also argue future perspective of the roles of the new model in the next generation atmospheric sciences. 2007 Elsevier Inc. Ultra-high resolution atmospheric global circulation model NICAM on graphics processing unit

. Abstract— Climate simulations have significant role in analyzing changes that have occurred in the Earth, give us better understanding of the recently happened processes. Most of the existing models perform approximate results and fundamental improvements of the software models are necessary to increase accuracy. We present an efficient implementation of ultra-high resolution atmospheric glob...

Performance Optimization and Evaluation of a Global Climate Application using a 440m Horizontal Mesh on the K computer

Using almost all the compute nodes on the K computer, we evaluated the performance of the Nonhydrostatic Icosahedral Atmospheric Model (NICAM), a weather/climate application for a high-resolution global atmospheric simulation study. First, based on profiling results, we improved single node performance using six dynamical and two physical kernel programs extracted from the application, resultin...

Asian summer monsoon simulated by a global cloud-system-resolving model: Diurnal to intra-seasonal variability

[1] Interaction of convection and circulation is key to the Asian summer monsoon, but difficult to represent in global models. Here we report results from simulations for the summer of 2004 by a global cloud-system-resolving model, NICAM. At both 14and 7-km horizontal resolution, NICAM simulates the observed monsoon circulation patterns, and the northward propagation of precipitation. The 7-km ...

Multi-GPU Implementation of the NICAM Atmospheric Model

Climate simulation models are used for a variety of scientific problems and accuracy of the climate prognoses is mostly limited by the resolution of the models. Finer resolution results in more accurate prognoses but, at the same time, significantly increases computational complexity. This explains the increasing interest to the High Performance Computing (HPC), and GPU computations in particul...

Outcomes and challenges of global high-resolution non-hydrostatic atmospheric simulations using the K computer

This article reviews the major outcomes of a 5-year (2011–2016) project using the K computer to perform global numerical atmospheric simulations based on the non-hydrostatic icosahedral atmospheric model (NICAM). The K computer was made available to the public in September 2012 and was used as a primary resource for Japan’s Strategic Programs for Innovative Research (SPIRE), an initiative to in...
